When I first started blogging years ago, SEO was not even on my radar. I remember scribbling notes in the margins of my planner, trying to figure out what “keywords” even meant and if I was doing it right. Fast-forward to today, and here we are, closing out 2025, and things look completely different from even 2024!
This year, Google’s AI Overviews and the mid-2025 Core Update reminded us that SEO is no longer about gaming the system. It’s about serving your reader well. Search engines are focusing less on keyword tricks and more on understanding intent, context, and authority.
That may sound foreign, but here’s the good news: if you’re writing with heart and a genuine desire to help your readers, you’re already ahead of the game. All that’s left is to polish the basics, things like site speed, mobile experience, and content depth, to make sure your blog isn’t just found, but trusted.

As I am sure you know, search engines are your browsers, such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Pinterest. The goal is to have your blogs appear on Google search, right? And you want them to be ranked first as soon as possible. That is where SEO becomes your most valuable tool.
Now, before we get too deep, let’s go over a few acronyms. I know when I first started on this blogging journey, I was confused by all the abbreviations bloggers use. You may already know thee, but for those new to the gig, here you go!
- SEO: Search Engine Optimization – Increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.
- SEM: Search Engine Marketing – A broader term than SEO, it includes SEO and other search marketing tactics, like paid search ads.
- SERP: Search Engine Results Page – The page you see after entering a query into a search engine.
- CTR: Click-Through Rate – A metric that measures the number of clicks advertisers receive on their ads per number of impressions.
- CMS: Content Management System – A software application used to manage the creation and modification of digital content.
- PPC: Pay-Per-Click – An internet advertising model used to drive website traffic, where an advertiser pays a publisher when the ad is clicked.
- CPC: Cost Per Click – The price paid by an advertiser for one click on their ad directs one visitor to their website.
- CPM: Cost Per Thousand Impressions – A marketing term used to denote the price of 1,000 advertisement impressions on one webpage.
- GA: Google Analytics – A web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic.
- GSC: Google Search Console – A free service offered by Google that helps you monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your site’s presence in Google Search results.
- UX: User Experience – How a person feels when interacting with a system, including a website, web application, or desktop software.
- UI: User Interface – The point of human-computer interaction and communication in a device; this includes the screen, keyboard, and mouse.

Once again, can I confess? I used to be so crazy overwhelmed by all the SEO tools. I’d open one, stare at the data, and then… close it. But over time, I’ve found the ones that actually help instead of confuse me.

Furthermore, bloggers need to stay current on what is trending in the blogging world. Those trends include Google’s HCO (Helpful Content Update), Accessibility efforts, Voice Search Optimization, and other forms of content. The different forms may include, but are not limited to, social media trends, video content, podcasting and audio content, collaboration, AI integration, and community involvement. These trends will come and go, shaping how individuals consume content. Staying up on the latest trends is your job as a blogger.

Before I began blogging, this “organic traffic” was a mystery to me. So, I will break it down for you, just in case you are new to blogging like I was. Forgive me if it seems basic; I like to be thorough!

Unlike paid traffic, which comes from advertisements, this organic traffic is generated through search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo. Organic traffic is highly valued because it’s targeted—people are finding your site because they’re searching for something specific you offer. It’s also cost-effective, as you’re not paying for these visits directly.
However, building organic traffic takes time and requires consistent SEO, content creation, and site optimization efforts. So there are other ways to gain traffic in the meantime. Here they are:
- Direct Traffic: This happens when visitors come directly to your website by typing your URL into their browser or through a bookmark. It’s often a result of people already knowing about your blog or business.
- Referral Traffic: Referral traffic is generated when a user clicks on a link from another website (excluding search engines) that directs them to your site. This can come from articles, blog posts, or other websites linking to your content.
- Social Media Traffic: As the name suggests, this type of traffic comes from social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc. When you or others share your blog posts on social media channels, it can drive a significant amount of traffic to your site.
