Blogging for Beginners

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”

Lao Tzu, ancient Chinese philosopher and writer.

Starting blog posts requires a ton of learning and even more steps to follow—I’ve been there! Whether you’re diving into online courses, getting advice from successful bloggers, or learning through keyword research and practice, there are some great ways to get going.

First things first: pick a suitable blogging platform and nail down your blog niche. Focus on creating valuable content that resonates with your target audience. Using relevant keywords and a solid content strategy will help boost your blog’s visibility in search engine results.

Also, setting up an editorial calendar can help you stay organized and ensure you’re consistently publishing high-quality content. Incorporate internal links and external links to enhance the user experience and support your SEO efforts. With a bit of patience and planning, you’ll set yourself up for success and make your first blog post shine!

A Little Bit About My Blogging Journey

When I started, all I had was a passion for writing and a handful of unrefined skills. T. Harv Eker, an author and motivational speaker, captures the beginning of my blogging career oh-so-perfectly:

“Every master was once a disaster.”

I didn’t have much of a clue about keyword research or content strategy, but I dove into online courses, spent countless late nights researching, and learned through trial and error. It was a long road, but that hard work paid off!

10 Beginner Blogging Tips

My hope is that the tips I’m sharing today will help jump-start your blogging career and save you some of those years of trial and error. With a bit of guidance and some valuable insights, you’ll be on your way to creating a successful blog faster than I ever did!

1 | Define Your Purpose

One of the first steps in your blogging journey is to clearly define your blog name and purpose. Knowing your blog’s purpose will guide your content strategy and help you create valuable content for your target audience.

Ask yourself… What’s your specific topic? Are you here to educate, entertain, or solve a particular problem?

2 | Create an Audience Persona

Crafting a target audience persona is one of the best ways to focus your content. Imagine your ideal reader—how old are they? What are their interests and pain points? This powerful tool will help you tailor your content and improve your user experience, leading to better engagement and results.

Here’s a little guide that I use to help imagine the reader’s persona for my own blog and any other clients I write for:

3 | Choose the Appropriate Voice and Style

Match your blog’s voice to its type and specific topic. Whether you’re running a travel blog, a beauty blog, or a scientific blog, choosing the right tone—be it casual or formal—will resonate better with your audience. This attention to sentence structure and writing skills makes a big difference.

Below are a few examples of how the type of blog you write calls for a specific voice and writing style:

Lifestyle Blogs:

Health & Wellness, Travel, Home Décor

For lifestyle blogs, think friendly and conversational.

Personal Finance Blogs:

Budgeting Tips, Investing, Debt Management

These should be informative and authoritative but still approachable.

Food Blogs:

Recipes, Restaurant Reviews, Cooking Tips

Food blogs should be warm and inviting. Use descriptive language to make your recipes or reviews come to life.

Educational Blogs:

Study Tips, Subject-Specific Advice, Educational Resources

Aim for an informative and supportive tone. You’re providing valuable knowledge, so clarity is key.

4 | Post at a Strategic Time

Timing your posts can greatly affect your blog’s reach. Analyze when your audience is most active, whether it’s on mobile devices or through social media platforms. Posting at these optimal times helps ensure your content gets the best results and maximizes engagement.

5 | Blog Frequently and Consistently

Consistency is key! Finding a rhythm for posting frequently will help keep your blog active and maintain an engaged audience. Stick to your content calendar to plan and publish posts regularly, boosting your online presence over the long run.

6 | Organize Your Blog for Skimming

Since many readers skim through content, make sure your blog is easy to navigate. Use visual elements to break up text. Things like bullet points, graphics, clear, catchy headlines, and concise headings will guide readers to the content they need.

Here’s how you can break up your text:

7 | Do More than Just Writing Blog Content

Content creation is just the start. Expand your reach by sharing your posts on social media platforms, using email marketing to engage your email list, and exploring affiliate marketing.

“Content is fire, social media is gasoline.”

Jay Baer, author and marketing consultant

If social media isn’t your strength, consider hiring a professional to manage your social media accounts.

8 | Include Quotes and Links

Enrich your posts with quotes from industry experts and links to credible sources. Use internal links to guide readers to more of your content and external links to provide additional resources. This will add valuable information and boost your blog’s credibility.

9 | Set Goals

Regularly setting goals is an important step in growing your blog. Define short-term goals, like increasing your email list or improving your writing process, as well as long-term goals for expanding your blog’s reach and exploring new blog topics.
