First - It Takes Time to Build Confidence

The truth? Blogging takes a lot of time, and yet somehow, it’s easy to feel behind before you even hit “publish” on your first post. But what’s the rush?

The most effective ways to grow as a content creator don’t involve hustling 24/7 or burning out on your blog content. In fact, the easy way to lose steam is to focus only on numbers, clicks, and monetization before your voice is even warmed up.

Give yourself a little bit of grace. You’re not just creating a blog. You’re building a personal brand, learning a powerful tool (aka the writing process), and crafting something that reflects your true self.

That takes time—and it should!

Angie Gensler, a digital marketing expert, says, “Successful blogging takes time to offer a return. Some of the most successful blogs you’ll come across have been active for over a decade.”

But, for now, we’ll start with 12 months.

A Dose of Sunshine Along the Way

This past years of blogging growth didn’t just shape my business, they shaped the reinvented me. And that’s exactly the heart behind my book, Sprinkle it with Sunshine. If you’ve ever felt stuck between the old version of you and the one you’re trying to grow into, this book is for you. It’s a cozy, honest encouragement for women stepping into new seasons, especially those in the empty nest years, who are ready to rediscover their voice, rebuild their confidence, and redefine what’s next.

Every chapter in Sprinkle It with Sunshine reflects a piece of my personal journey, including how I built Simply Sunni from scratch. It’s filled with reminders that your voice matters, your story is powerful, and even in the hard stuff, there’s joy to be found. If you need a little extra light as you continue blogging, building, or just becoming who you were always meant to be, this book will meet you there.

A Year of Building Confidence and Clarity as a Blogger

Let’s break down the year ahead into actionable steps that’ll help you make informed decisions, stay inspired, and keep moving forward—even on the weird days where your to-do lists and self-doubt tag team to take you down.

Month 1: Leaning Into Your Niche

Finding your niche isn’t about choosing the “right” topic—it’s about choosing your topic. The one you can write about on a regular basis without getting bored to tears.

Here’s how to refine it:

  • Don’t go too broad—”lifestyle” or “business” is a jungle. Narrow it down.
  • Don’t go too narrow—you need room to grow and explore new ideas.
  • Choose something tied to your personal life, career goals, or own experience.
  • Make sure it’s a way of life, not a phase—you’re in this for the long run.
  • Know that your niche can (and probably will) evolve—pivoting isn’t failure; it’s growth.

Month 2: Establishing Your Voice

You’re not just writing posts—you’re learning to sing with your own voice in a room full of voices of others. And no, you don’t need to sound like a professor of academic writing unless that’s your thing.

Tips to find your voice:

  • Write like you talk—your blog shouldn’t sound like a term paper.
  • Use your own blog as a sandbox—try creative writing, storytelling, and lists.
  • Read your posts out loud—do they sound like you?
  • Let your tone reflect your personal goal: warm? witty? wise? A combo?
  • Embrace imperfection. Clarity comes from creating, not waiting for the right direction.

Month 3: Learning About Your Audience

“When you understand who your audience is and what they want, you can create content, design paid products, and produce more of what they like to continue to grow your audience with very little effort.”

Cathrin Manning

Now that you’ve found your groove, turn the spotlight outward. Who’s reading your posts?

  • Use social media to see what posts people share or comment on.
  • Look at search results for inspiration and ideas.
  • Host informational interviews or polls on your blog or weekly newsletter.
  • Ask your readers questions. The more you listen, the more connected you’ll feel.
  • Focus on personal growth and audience growth—they feed each other.

Month 4: Discovering Your Brand

You’re starting to feel like a real content creator now—congrats! This month is all about defining your personal brand.

  • What colors, fonts, and imagery reflect your vibe?
  • Is your writing bold and punchy? Soft and lyrical? Honest and raw?
  • Does your site feel like you? If not, new offers or a small rebrand might be in order.

Month 5: Defeating Your Inner Critic

This month is a biggie. The lack of confidence monster is real, and it creeps in when you least expect it. You might hear things like:

“Who even reads this?”

“Why would anyone care what I think?”

“This post is a mess.”

We’ve all been there. Let’s fight back:

  • Acknowledge it—yes, your inner critic is loud, but that doesn’t make it right.
  • Counter every critique with a win. (“This post is a mess” → “But I published it.”)
  • Limit scrolling—poor performance in comparison isn’t the truth, it’s a trap.
  • Remember your why—this blog has a sole purpose, and it’s not perfection.

Month 6: Taking in the Feedback—Good and Bad

At this point, you’ve shared enough high-quality content to get some feedback. Ask for it!

  • Get friends or team members to read your posts.
  • Collect reviews or testimonials.
  • If possible, hire a pro for a blog audit—it’s a valuable insight investment.
  • Make a pros and cons list of what’s working and what’s not.

Good feedback? Celebrate it. Bad feedback? Learn from it. Either way—it’s progress.

Month 7: Avoid Comparing Yourself to the Competition

Keyword research, trend reports, and niche deep dives are great—until they steal your joy.

  • Learn from the best bloggers, but don’t copy.
  • Let others inspire your new challenges, not derail your blogging efforts.
  • Your blog is an ongoing process—nobody started out polished.

Month 8: Revisit Old Content

Time to take a new perspective on the old stuff.

  • Refresh your first few posts with stronger intros, better formatting, or main points.
  • Update titles and SEO—hello, search engines!
  • Repurpose blog content into social media posts or new offers.

Month 9: Dealing with Writer’s Block Yet?

It hits everyone, even the best bloggers.

Tips to overcome it:

  • Step away from the screen—seriously.
  • Use a voice memo to talk through your next post idea.
  • Freewrite without editing—permission to make it messy.
  • Create a to-do list of mini tasks: brainstorm, outline, write intro, etc.

Month 10: Build Confidence with Self-Reflection

Let’s pause and look at the bigger picture:

  • What posts made you feel most proud?
  • What feedback lifted you up?
  • What felt like hard work, and what felt like play?
  • Have your career goals shifted?
  • Do you feel more like your true self when you write?

This isn’t just blogging—it’s continuous learning.

Month 11: Hold Your Head High

By now, that little voice might be saying things like:

“You’re not growing fast enough.”

“You haven’t made money yet.”

“What’s the next step, even?”

Pause. Look back.

You’ve shown up nearly every single day, or close to it. You’ve published, grown, and found your voice!

That’s no small thing, my friend. That’s a fantastic way to build confidence and community.

Month 12: Celebrate Your Progress

Here’s the right decision: honor this journey. You’ve made huge strides—not just in blog writing, but in your mindset issues, your content, and your sense of direction.

Maybe you haven’t earned a cent. Maybe you’re not on the search results front page. But guess what?

You’ve created something honest, something lasting. Your blogging efforts reflect personal growth, and that’s the foundation of every successful blog.

Now go—celebrate, write your next post, and take the next step with greater confidence.
