Yes, Writing Can Calm Your Mind While Building Your Brand

News flash! Our lives, here in the Baerwalde household, have been beyond crazy – in the best way! And if I am being honest, this “calm your mind” post was for me! Over the past few weeks, I’ve experienced everything from deep worry and unexpected changes to pure joy. The biggest blessing? My daughter Shelby—who you might know as our incredible illustrator for Adventures with Gigi Pop—gave birth to her beautiful baby girl, my perfect new grandbaby, Fae Grace, on June 17th. Cue all the feels!

We’re also in the middle of a big family move to a new home this month. That means boxes everywhere, shifting routines, and learning how to find peace in the mess. It’s a good kind of chaos, but it’s still a lot. And yet, through all of it—baby cuddles, brand deadlines, and packing tape, writing has been the one thing that brings me back to center.

From journaling at the end of the day, writing blog posts like this one, and scribbling notes on a piece of paper between tasks, writing has been my calm in the storm. It’s how I process emotions, how I keep showing up, and how I continue building Simply Sunni with intention and heart.

Why Writing Works as a Mental Health Boost

Let’s talk about one of the most underrated and effective tools for your mental health: writing. Whether you’re journaling in a quiet private space at the end of the day or typing a blog post from your kitchen table, the act of putting thoughts into words can do wonders to calm your mind and unwind your emotions.

According to research from the University of Bolton, the psychological benefits of creative writing include reduced stress, improved mood, and better emotional regulation. Expressive writing—where you freely process your thoughts without worrying about grammar or perfection—has been shown to help individuals manage everything from panic disorders to everyday stressors. When you take the time to process emotions through storytelling, reflection, or journaling, you’re actually strengthening your emotional intelligence and unlocking your brain’s natural coping mechanisms.

“Sometimes the only way to untangle your thoughts is to let them spill out onto the page—messy, raw, and exactly as they are. That’s where the healing begins.” – Sunni

That quote came from a very real moment in my life. Writing became the release valve. And it can be for you, too.

The team at PsychPlus highlights that journaling helps improve sleep, regulate anxious thoughts, and lower the body’s stress response. It acts like a mental detox, helping you clear out mental clutter and create space for clarity. Simply writing down your thoughts—even if you never share them—can reduce the intensity of negative emotions and help you reframe difficult situations with more compassion and creativity.

Even something as simple as a gratitude journaling practice or jotting down a gratitude list has been linked to increased happiness and a more hopeful outlook. And if you’re not sure where to start, Grammarly’s blog suggests using calming journal prompts or sentence stems to guide your thoughts. These prompts don’t just improve your writing skills—they bring mental well-being front and center. Great idea, right?

In fact, I believe one sentence can change the tone of your entire day. One private page in your notebook can lead to a shift in mindset. And over time, this simple type of writing can make a positive impact on how you carry stress, how you handle hard times, and how confidently you show up in your personal and professional life.

Friend, if you’re in a season of high stress or feeling emotionally overwhelmed, don’t underestimate what a piece of paper and a few quiet minutes can do. It’s not about being a great writer. It’s about being an honest one.

How Writing Shapes a Strong Personal Brand

Small businesses, this paragraph is for you! Writing isn’t just something we do to sort through thoughts or reflect on hard times; it’s one of the most powerful tools you have for shaping your brand voice and building trust with your ideal readers. From posting on social media, sending an email to your list, or publishing a new blog post, every written word you put into the world tells a story, not just about your business, but about you.

If you’re a content writer, small business owner, or freelance writer trying to find your place in this digital world, writing is where your personal brand begins to take shape. Each sentence you craft becomes part of your personal brand statement. Your tone, storytelling style, and word choices reveal more than you might realize; they become the emotional handshake that welcomes people into your website, and yes, your world. It’s how they start to recognize you, connect with you, and ultimately trust you.

In a recent Forbes article, branding expert William Arruda shared,

“Writing forces you to distill your ideas and create a clearer picture of who you are and what you stand for.”

That couldn’t be more true. The creative process of writing helps you clarify your mission, refine your message, and speak more directly to the people you want to serve. When you consistently share personal experiences and speak from the heart, your content becomes memorable and meaningful. That’s what builds a strong personal brand—not flashy marketing, but an honest connection.

And no, you don’t need to be a professional author to get this right. You just need to be you.

Because your real voice? That’s the one your ideal audience is waiting for.

Two Ways Writing Helps You Grow (Even When You Don’t Feel Like It)

Here are two specific ways writing can give you both peace and purpose:

  • Free writing for mental clarity: Set a timer for 10 minutes and write without editing. Let your thoughts flow. You’ll be surprised what surfaces when you stop trying to “sound good” and just let it out.

  • Storytelling for connection: Share a little bit of your personal experiences in your content. Whether it’s about a tough day, a big decision, or a new chapter (like becoming a Gigi again!), this kind of storytelling builds trust and relatability.

Writing helps reduce mental clutter, increases emotional connection with your audience, and sharpens your brand identity. It’s a great way to reflect on the important things while also creating content that resonates deeply with like-minded individuals.

Feeling Stuck? Start Simple

If the blank page feels a little intimidating today, you’re not alone. It’s easy to overthink and get caught up in the fear of judgment, especially when you’re trying to write something meaningful for your blog post, brand identity, or even your personal life. But writing doesn’t have to start with brilliance. In fact, one of my favorite Grammarly blog articles reminds us that the simplest ways to begin—like a single sentence or a few sentence stems—can spark the entire creative process.

Try starting with these easy journal prompts:

  • “Today, I’m grateful for…”

  • “Right now, I need…”

  • “If I could talk to my younger self, I’d say…”

This kind of writing isn’t just a good way to ease into content creation; it’s a powerful tool for stress relief and improving your mental well-being. Whether you’re free writing, building out your personal mission statement, or jotting down ideas for your next digital product, getting anything on paper is the first step.

As I wrote in Sprinkle it with Sunshine:

“You don’t have to know the whole plan, you just need the courage to take the next step.”

Sometimes, that next step is writing just one honest paragraph. Other times, it turns into a gratitude list, a new blog idea, or even a beautiful story you never expected to tell. The benefits of writing are endless when you allow yourself to start small and let go of perfection.

Where I’m At Now (And Where I’m Headed)

Honestly? I’m still writing my way through this season. Shelby will be back to illustrating new Adventures with Gigi Pop books soon (once baby snuggles slow down a bit!), and I’m quietly working on a new book of my own. But that’s still a surprise… and who knows when I’ll actually finish it. 😉

Writing has been my wind-down routine, my creative outlet, and my sounding board. It’s helped me show up, even when it’s been hard, and stay connected to the heart of what I do.

And that’s the message I hope you carry with you today:
Writing doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be you.
