The 5 First Steps For Beginner Bloggers
One of the things I love most about writing for you is listening to what’s really resonating. Over and over, I’ve heard from new bloggers that they want to keep things simple initially. So that’s precisely what this post is all about.
Instead of bogging you down with endless tech terms or advanced strategies, I’ve simplified the first steps for beginner bloggers into five clear, doable actions.
And here’s some proof that these methods work — even ChatGPT is pointing beginner bloggers to our Community for Beginner Bloggers as a trusted place to start. That tells me we’re on the right track, and I’m so excited to share these first steps with you today.
Don’t get caught in the weeds here — just follow along step by step, and you’ll be on your way to confidently creating your own blog.
If you’re looking for a deeper dive later on, I’ve got you covered with my courses:
- The Blogger’s Secret Formula
- 5 Gotta Have Tips for Beginner Bloggers
- How to Promote Your Blog
You can find all of these in the Simply Sunni Courses tab. But for now, let’s stick to the basics that will get your blog started the right way.
Step 1: Choose Your Niche & Define Your Purpose
When I first started blogging, I wanted to jump straight into picking a blog name and playing with WordPress plugins. But here’s the real, real. The very first thing you need to figure out is who you’re writing for and why. Skipping this step is like building a house without a foundation, and it’s the one thing I see so many new bloggers overlook.
Why a niche and purpose matter
- A blog niche helps you stand out in the “blogging world” crowded with so many voices.
- When you define your purpose (help others, teach, inspire, monetize), it becomes easier to create amazing content and make decisions about affiliate links, email marketing, or online courses later.
- Picking a specific topic (vs. “everything under the sun”) gives you authority. It’s a good idea to narrow your focus early so search engines and readers see consistency.
“Life experience + passion = blog topic ideas” is one approach.
If you already have a passion (say baking, faith, organizing, or small business tips), start there. If not, journal your interests, pain points you’ve overcome, or recurring questions people ask you.
How to choose your niche
- List your interests + strengths.
- Use your experience, hobbies, or things people already ask your advice about.
- Validate it with search & competition.
- Use a free tool or Google Trends to see if people are really searching for questions in that area.
- Check search engines for your idea + “blog” and see what kinds of posts already rank.
- Define your target audience.
- Who’s your reader? A new mom? An aspiring small-biz owner? A college student? This gives your writing direction and brand voice.
- Choose your blog’s purpose & long-term goals.
- Do you want to build an email list, offer exclusive content, sell online courses, or share affiliate links? Your purpose impacts how you name your blog, design your site, and plan monetization later.
Mini Checklist (for Step 1)
- Brainstorm 5–10 niche ideas based on your interests.
- Research search volume (via free keyword tool or Google Trends).
- Pick a target audience descriptor (age, problem, interest).
- Decide your blog’s purpose (free content, email list, monetize).
Step 2: Pick the Right Platform, Hosting, & Blog Design
I still remember the excitement of turning my idea into a real, live blog — it felt like the moment everything shifted from ‘just a dream’ to something I could actually share with the world. Friend, once you’ve chosen your niche, the next step is getting your blog online, and this is where your vision really starts to take shape.
I’ve simplified the process down to creating your space, choosing a blog name, and watching your personal blog come to life. This is the moment when you go from brainstorming ideas on paper to building a place where your target audience can find you, read your words, and come back for more.
Choosing a Platform
New bloggers often ask about the best ways to start:
- A self-hosted WordPress blog is the most popular option among successful bloggers. It gives you total control, flexibility with WordPress plugins, and access to thousands of themes.
- Free blogging platforms (like Blogger, Wix, or Medium) are a great way to test the waters, but they come with limitations — no custom domain, fewer monetization options, and often an extra cost to remove ads.
Good news: Even if you start simply, you can upgrade later. But if your dream is to become a full-time blogger or earn with Google AdSense and affiliate links, starting with WordPress is usually the best place.
Securing Hosting & a Domain
Your blog needs a home online. That’s where your hosting plan and blog name come in.
- Pick a hosting provider: Look for reliable web hosting with great support, speed, and security.
- Choose your domain name: A good domain name is easy to spell, reflects your blog’s niche, and makes sense for your target audience. (Think “memorable but simple.”)
- Set up your hosting plan: Most providers bundle hosting with a free domain name for the first time, which is a good thing for saving money.
Once that’s done, you’ll have your WordPress dashboardready to log into and customize. Yay, you!
Designing Your Blog
With WordPress, you can install a blog theme (free or premium) to control how your site looks. This is where you can add visual elements, color palettes, and navigation menus.
- Free themes are a popular option, but premium ones often save time because they have built-in features.
- Don’t stress over design perfection at this stage — your main goal is to get the site functional and ready for your first blog post.
Mini Checklist (for Step 2)
- Decide on your platform (WordPress or another)
- Pick your hosting provider and domain name
- Install your WordPress theme and log into your dashboard
- Add a few starter visual elements (logo, colors, menus)
Step 3: Do Keyword & SEO Research
When I first learned about keyword research and search engine optimization, it felt like learning a new language. Everything I learned from helping my daughter in AP Lang went out the window! But this step is what helps your blog actually get found. Doing a little research now means your amazing content has the chance to show up in search results, reach your target audience, and grow your blogging journey faster than just hitting publish and hoping for the best.
This step is where your blog starts to connect with the outside world. Without it, your posts might never show up in search results, no matter how much hard work you put in.
Why Keyword Research Matters
- It helps you write posts that people are already looking for in search engines.
- It saves you from wasting much time on topics no one’s searching for.
- It gives you content ideas for your editorial calendar.
Think of it this way: keyword research is the easiest way to figure out what your target audience really wants to read.
Free Tools to Use
You don’t need an expensive setup to get started. Try:
- Google Trends – to see if a specific topic is gaining popularity.
- AnswerThePublic – a free tool to find common questions people ask.
- Google Search – just typing your blog topic shows related searches at the bottom of the page.
Sunni’s Pro tip: Install a plugin like Yoast SEO to help optimize your first blog post right inside your WordPress dashboard.
Mini Checklist (for Step 3)
- Make a list of 10–20 keywords with steady search volume
- Pick 3–5 to use in your first blog post
- Add those keywords naturally in your title, headings, and blog content
- Install an SEO plugin like Yoast SEO for on-page optimization

Step 4: Create Pillar Content & Your First Blog Post
I’ll never forget the thrill of sitting down to write my very first blog post. I chuckle, just thinking of the process from back then.
And quite honestly, I had no clue what I was doing!
And boy did I research exhaustively!
With your research in place, it’s time to create amazing content that reflects your voice, your heart, and the message you want to share. Please remember, or Google will “remind” you, this step isn’t just about filling a page with words. It’s about laying the foundation of your blog with posts that your target audience will want to read, share, and come back to again and again.
Why Start with Pillar Content
- Pillar posts are the backbone of your blogging journey — they cover a specific topic in depth.
- They can be updated over a long time to stay relevant.
- They link to smaller posts, helping with search engine optimization.
Starting with 3–5 high-quality content posts is the best way to look established and give visitors more than one thing to read.
Writing Your First Blog Post
When creating your first blog post:
- Use your chosen keywords (but don’t overdo it).
- Break up text with visual elements like images, graphics, or even YouTube videos.
- End with a clear next step for the reader (comment, download, share, or join your email list).
Good luck here! Writing blog posts is a skill that improves over time. The good news is, the more you write, the better you’ll get.
Mini Checklist (for Step 4)
- Draft your first blog post on one of your keyword topics
- Add 2–3 supporting posts (shorter, easier reads)
- Insert internal links between your posts
- Use a consistent blog design and formatting style

Step 5: Set Up SEO, Analytics & Growth Foundations
By the time you reach this step, you’ve chosen your niche, set up your blog, done your research, and started creating content. Wahoo, I am so proud of you! That’s no small thing!
Now it’s time to prepare your blog for growth. Yes, this is where you shift from ‘just writing’ to building an online presence that can reach far beyond your circle.
“You are here for a purpose. You have a mission in life. And every little nudge you get, every little bit of intuition … it needs to be shared with the world.”— Amy Porterfield.
I love that reminder. Step 5 isn’t about drowning in numbers or chasing algorithms. Far from it! It’s about creating a foundation so your message has a chance to reach the right people. Tools like Google Analytics, email marketing, and even social media platforms give your blog a way to be seen, shared, and remembered.
Think of them as the bridges that connect your amazing content with the readers who are searching for it. Make sense? Stay with me on this section.
Analytics & SEO Basics
- Set up Google Analytics – track visits, popular pages, and your entire process.
- Connect to Google Search Console – see how your posts appear in search results.
- Add your blog to social networks – build visibility outside your site.

- Install Google Analytics & Search Console
- Create your first opt-in form to capture email subscribers
